Introducing... Elizabeth's Dowry

a Collaboration of Marcus Fabrics,
Karen Styles of Somerset Patchwork and Quiltilng, and the Quilters' Guild

Inspired by The Quilters' Guild Collection

Marcus Fabrics is thrilled to announce an exciting new collaboration with Karen Styles and The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles, an international venture that debuts with the new ELIZABETH'S DOWRY fabric collection.

The line is inspired by the historic Mariner's Compass Coverlet (1820-1829) from the Quilters' Guild Collection. This coverlet is exquisitely constructed, and was made by Mary Dennis as part of her dowry:

"Mary, a farmer's daughter from Devonshire in England, married Richard Cann in 1828 and they had six daughters; Annie, Jane, Elizabeth, Fanny, Mary and Margaret, and one son, John. Unfortunately, Richard died of Typhoid Fever in 1842, leaving Mary and her children no choice but to leave their farm and move to Hartland village where they ran a drapers and grocery shop. Mary stayed running the shop for nearly 50 years before her death at the age of 92 in 1891. This quilt is one of five in The Quilters' Guild Collection from the Dennis/Cann family, and it is presumed that the other four quilts were made by Mary and/or her daughters, four of whom remained at home and helped Mary run the shop. Two of the quilts are cot quilts, presumably made for Charles Tottenham, the son of the only daughter that married".

Like Marcus and The Quilter's Guild, Australian quilt and fabric designer Karen Styles (left) of Somerset Patchwork & Quilting was also excited by the original coverlet and its creative potential for today's quilter, which inspired her to create the individual fabric prints as well as the featured for-purchase quilt project for the collection.

Stephanie Dell 'Olio, President of the retail division at Marcus, sees the collaboration as yet another innovation for the company. "What's exciting about this collection, aside from its historical origins and international scope, is the blending of traditional inspiration with today's digital printing and production technologies that will allow us to offer greater color capabilities."

"The Quilters' Guild Collection is a wonderful source of inspiration for quilt makers, designers and researchers throughout the world. This collaboration with Marcus Fabrics and Karen Styles represents an exciting new direction for The Quilters' Guild, and it's only fitting that we should start the journey with the motif of the Mariner's compass at centre stage," said Chris Gatman, Chief Executive, The Quilters' Guild.
